Broome, June 21 - 25
Broome 536nm, 4 days and 3.5hrs sailing
We depart Exmouth at 9.30am on Tuesday June 17th, heading into rough seas. After a grueling 4 days of headache inducing, slam dunking conditions we finally reach Broome, and contrary to what we were expecting it’s a glass off. Phew! The journey wasn’t all bad. In fact we had many calm moments and some good sailing conditions as well. During the last few hours Colin decides to have one last go at trawling. We’ve lost most of our lures and our last wire trace, so I suggest he uses my G-string (I carry spares for the guitar). A while later I hear “Grab the net”, and Colin’s hauling in a huge Mackerel. He’s struggling with it until a shark takes two thirds of it, making it much easier to pull in. We still get four big fillets off what’s left!! Once moored up at Gantheaume Point we are happy to relax, recoup, have fresh fish for dinner, and meet up with friends the following day.

The tides in Broome are like nothing I’ve ever seen. You can leave your dinghy anchored in what you think is deep enough water, only to find it high and dry when you next turn around. It’s quick I tell ya!
We are fortunate enough to have the most hospitable of hosts during our Broome stay. Maxine and Arnhem not only let us stay in the beautiful guest room of their splendid home, but also cook for us and lend us a car to get around in. We are able to fuel up the boat and get provisions with the help of Monica and Paul who are to be our first guests through the Kimberley.
