My real training and enjoyment of sailing came a few years later when Colin and I decided we'd participate in the 2013 "Bali and Beyond" Race/Rally. However, our plans were thwarted at the eleventh hour by Colin having to have back surgery. The surgery was successful, and we changed tack and started working towards a four month sailing trip in 2014 up the West Coast of Australia, through the Kimberley, and back down. An ambitious trip by anyone's standards!!
In preparation I set off with Colin and his brother Andrew (aka Bink) to Quindalup, 100nm south, on what was to be my first overnight sail. We left Fremantle at 2pm on January 4th 2013, slightly under the weather as it was the day after Colin's 50th birthday, into a 25kn headwind and 4m swell. Around midnight we'd only made it as far as Mandurah (a mere 30nm), every minute of it rough, and I politely requested (ok begged) we pull in for the night. Fortunately the boys obliged. My next attempt at an overnight sail was a year later and much more successful (see Quindalup 2014).
As well as photos from our North West Cruisin' adventure, you can find photos from other sailing adventures, some still a work in progress.
